Issued as part of Moldova's ongoing numismatic program celebrating Romanian folkloric tradition, this piece draws on the fairy tale cycle popularized through 19th-century literary collections, particularly the versions recorded by Petre Ispirescu. Fat-Frumos — literally "Beautiful Youth" — functions as the Romanian-language equivalent of a generic prince-hero archetype, and Ileana Cosânzeana as his counterpart heroine. Moldova's use of shared Romanian folk heritage on official coinage reflects the country's complicated cultural politics, given that Romanian is the dominant spoken language while the state long officially designated it "Moldovan."
Tombac — a copper-zinc alloy — was chosen here over sterling for cost efficiency on a low-mintage collector piece with no circulation intent.
