| Obverse description | Bare-headed effigy of King Carol II facing left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and sharply cut facial features in a naturalistic portrait style. The circular legend CAROL II REGELE ROMANILOR runs along the periphery, divided left and right of the bust. The engraver's signature A. LAVRILLIER appears in small incuse lettering at the lower field beneath the truncation. The design is framed by a continuous inner beaded border. |

The 1930 Romanian 20 Lei was issued in the immediate aftermath of Carol II's controversial return from exile — he had formally renounced his succession rights in 1925 under pressure following a scandalous relationship with Elena Lupescu, only to outmaneuver his own young son Michael and reclaim the throne in June 1930. The new coinage was part of a deliberate rebranding of the monarchy within months of that reversal.
Nickel brass was an unusual alloy choice for Romanian coinage of the period, driven largely by postwar metal economics rather than tradition.
