Additional information

Romania's postwar monetary reforms culminated in the January 1952 redenomination, which rendered the 1951 aluminium coinage obsolete almost immediately after issue. The exchange rate for old currency was punishingly tiered — workers received better rates than urban "class enemies" — a deliberate instrument of economic leveling under the newly consolidated communist government. Coins like this one circulated for an exceptionally short window.
