| Reverse description | A full-color photographic reproduction of the facade of Catherine Palace (Tsarskoye Selo, near St. Petersburg) dominates the central field, depicting the Baroque blue-and-white exterior with gilded Atlantes figures, ornamental statuary, and the imperial double-headed eagle cartouche above the central pavilion. Above the palace image, an elaborate rocaille and scrollwork arch is rendered in raised relief, surmounted by an ornamental finial, with the legend PALACES OF ST. PETERSBURG arcing along the uppermost border. The name CATHERINE PALACE appears in a decorative cartouche with flanking scrollwork at the base of the design. The combination of color printing and sculpted silver relief gives the reverse a distinctive commemorative character. |
