The "Vædderen" (The Ram) coin is part of Denmark's long-running Encircling the Sea series, which ran from 1997 and used the 20-krone denomination to document Danish maritime history and research vessels. Vædderen served as a naval training ship for the Royal Danish Navy for decades, and its selection for this series reflected ongoing national interest in preserving the memory of Denmark's seafaring institutions rather than strictly commercial or military heritage.
Margrethe II's fourth portrait, introduced in 2001 by sculptor Karin Birgitte Lund, replaced the third portrait used since 1993.
