The First Sami Congress was held in Trondheim in 1917, bringing together Sami delegates from Norway and Sweden for the first coordinated political assembly in the people's history. The centenary issue marks a century of organizing that eventually led to the establishment of the Sámediggi — the Norwegian Sami Parliament — in 1989, following decades of assimilationist policies that had suppressed Sami language and land rights.
