Obverse description Bare-headed left-facing portrait bust of Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and a full beard. The effigy displays strong naturalistic modelling characteristic of late 19th-century medallic art. The engraver's signature DELOYE appears in small capitals on the truncation. The circular Latin legend JOHANN II FÜRST VON LIECHTENSTEIN runs along the upper periphery, separated from the bust by a fine beaded border.

Additional information

Johann II ruled Liechtenstein for 70 years — the longest reign of any European monarch in recorded history — yet the principality struck almost no coinage of its own during his tenure, relying instead on Austro-Hungarian currency for everyday commerce. This 1898 pattern was part of a short series of trial pieces produced but never approved for circulation, almost certainly intended to demonstrate monetary capability rather than fill any practical need.

The Divo-Murbach reference places it among a handful of documented Liechtenstein patterns from the period, all extreme rarities.
