Sigismund von Schrattenbach ruled Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, and is remembered today largely because of his patronage of the Mozart family — he employed Leopold Mozart as court musician and tolerated, with diminishing patience, the young Wolfgang's repeated absences on tour. These kreuzers were struck during the period when Wolfgang was between eleven and twelve years old, the family having recently returned from the first grand tour of Europe.
The Zöttl and Probszt references each cite two varieties across the two-year run, suggesting minor die differences between the 1767 and 1768 emissions rather than any administrative change in the issue.
