Obverse description Draped bust of Landgrave Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt facing right, his hair dressed in the late Baroque fashion and tied with a ribbon at the nape, the queue falling over the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine engraving of the periwig locks. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy reading LUDOVICUS IX D:G LANDGRAVIUS HASS., with the mint mark B appearing below the bust truncation. The coin's edge is bordered by a bold ornamented rim.
