| Obverse description | A large electoral hat surmounts an ornate cartouche frame into which seven heraldic shields are embedded, displaying the combined arms of the elector's territories: (1) Cologne, Westphalia, Engern, and Arnsberg; (2) Hildesheim; (3) Paderborn and Pyrmont; (4) Münster, Stromberg, Borkelo, and Weerdt; (5) Osnabrück; (6) the Teutonic Order; and (7) Bavaria and the Palatinate. A sword and crosier are crossed behind the cartouche, symbolising the elector's combined secular and ecclesiastical authority. The peripheral legend encircles the entire composition, recording the titles of Clemens August of Bavaria. The overall design reflects the elaborate Baroque heraldic style characteristic of German ecclesiastical coinage of the early eighteenth century. |
