The Magyar Postatakarékpénztár was pressed into emergency currency production following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in late 1918. Hungary's separation from Austria created an immediate banknote shortage — the new state had no central bank yet, and the Postal Savings Bank filled the gap by issuing denominations that the old joint monarchy had never needed to produce independently.

This 20 Korona was printed locally in Budapest rather than through the established Austro-Hungarian printing apparatus in Vienna, which had ceased to serve Hungarian interests. The Kun Soviet Republic, which governed Hungary from March to August 1919, inherited and continued circulating these notes — giving a single issue two very different political regimes within its first year.
