Arktikugol was a Soviet state trust established to mine coal on Svalbard, exploiting Norway's 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty obligation to permit commercial activity by signatory nationals. The trust issued its own internal scrip for use at the Barentsburg settlement store — Norwegian krone were not distributed to workers, and Soviet rubles had no practical use on Norwegian-administered territory. The scrip solved a genuinely awkward jurisdictional problem.
The 1957 series coincides with a modest expansion of Barentsburg operations during the late Stalin-to-Khrushchev transition period. Mintage figures were never published.
