Belarus introduced its post-Soviet kopeck coinage in 2009 as part of a broader effort to rationalize a currency that had been denominated in roubles carrying face values in the thousands — a direct legacy of the catastrophic inflation that followed independence. The 20 kopeck piece entered circulation against a rouble so devalued that even these small brass-plated coins represented a redenomination exercise rather than everyday utility.
The series was ultimately rendered moot when Belarus redenominated again in 2016, replacing 10,000 old roubles with 1 new rouble, which instantly made the entire kopeck coinage obsolete after just seven years.
