Obverse description The State Coat of Arms of the Soviet Union rendered in bold relief, depicting a globe surmounted by a hammer and sickle within a wreath of wheat ears bound by 16 ribbons arranged in groups of 8, 1, and 7, representing the sixteen constituent Soviet republics. A rising sun with radiating rays appears behind the globe. The Cyrillic legend СССР (USSR) is inscribed at the base of the design within the lower portion of the wreath.

Reverse description The denomination numeral '20' in large bold figures occupies the upper portion of a raised octagonal cartouche at the centre of the field, with the abbreviated denomination КОП (Kopecks) inscribed beneath in Cyrillic characters. The octagon is flanked on either side by sprigs of oak bearing acorns and leaves in high relief, while a wheat ear arches across the top of the cartouche. The four-digit date 1956 appears in the exergue below the central device.
