Reverse description A nude youth on horseback, depicted at a walking pace to the right, the horse rendered with careful attention to musculature and gait in the Hellenistic equestrian tradition. A six-pointed star appears in the upper right field, serving as a control symbol. The Greek royal legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ KAΣΣANΔΡOY runs around the field, identifying the issuer as King Kassander of Macedon. The letter Λ, a mint or magistrate control mark, is placed beneath the horse.

Additional information

Kassander never actually took the title of king until 305 BC, having governed Macedonia as regent following the death of Antipater — his own father — in 319 BC. His claim rested on controlling the royal family rather than blood right, and he consolidated that control by ordering the execution of Roxane and the young Alexander IV in 310/309 BC, eliminating the last legitimate Argead heir.

His reign lasted less than a decade under the royal title before his death from dropsy in 297 BC, after which Macedonia fractured almost immediately among rival successors.
