The Kyiv Contract Fair, revived after Ukrainian independence, traces its origins to a trade gathering established in Kyiv in 1797 — making the bicentennial of that founding the occasion for this issue. The fair had been one of the most significant commercial exchanges in the Russian Empire before Soviet authorities suppressed it in the 1930s, and its post-independence restoration carried deliberate political weight for a state actively reconstructing national economic institutions.
This was among the earliest silver commemoratives in Ukraine's fledgling numismatic program, launched only in 1995.
