Ivan Franko — poet, novelist, political agitator, and co-founder of the Ruthenian-Ukrainian Radical Party — died in 1916, exactly a century before this commemorative was issued. The 160th anniversary dating refers to his birth in 1856 in Nahuievychi, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in territory that is now western Ukraine. That geographic detail matters: Franko spent his adult life writing in a region that many in Kyiv-centric Ukrainian cultural politics had historically treated as peripheral.
P#128 is a commemorative replacement for the standard circulating 20 hryvnia, printed domestically at the NBU's own facility rather than contracted abroad.
