Issued to mark the 350th anniversary of the Cossack uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, which began in 1648 and ultimately resulted in the Pereyaslav Agreement of 1654 — a treaty with Muscovy whose exact terms and implications Ukraine and Russia interpreted so differently that historians are still arguing about it. The uprising itself drove the Hetmanate's emergence as a functioning polity, and Ukrainian commemorative policy in the late 1990s leaned heavily on that period as foundational national mythology during the post-Soviet identity reconstruction.
