Princess Olha (Olga) of Kyiv assumed regency following the assassination of her husband Igor I around 945 AD, making 2020 the 1,075th anniversary of that succession. Her rule is notable in part for her brutal and methodical revenge against the Derevlians who killed Igor — Byzantine chroniclers and the Primary Chronicle both describe the episode in considerable detail — and later for her conversion to Orthodox Christianity in Constantinople, a full generation before her grandson Volodymyr's mass baptism of Rus in 988. She was canonized by the Orthodox Church as equal-to-the-apostles.
The partial gilding applied to select design elements during striking is characteristic of the National Bank of Ukraine's commemorative program for historical figures of this caliber.
