Weissenkirchen in der Wachau is a small wine-producing market town in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — to address the acute small-change shortage that persisted well after the First World War. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left rural communities effectively without viable coinage, forcing local authorities to print their own fractional scrip.
These Austrian Gemeinde Notgeld issues were self-liquidating by design, redeemable once normal currency circulation resumed. Most were never redeemed in full.
