Waldhausen is a small market town in the Strudengau district of Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller notgeld belongs to the wave of emergency municipal currency that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the severe coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Hundreds of Austrian communes, many far smaller than a provincial market town, commissioned their own issues during this period, typically through Viennese printers.
Chwala's Druck, based in Vienna's 7th district, handled a number of these small-denomination regional commissions. Adolf Klingsbögl's design credit is worth noting — he was a working graphic artist of the period, not a decorative afterthought.
