This is one of hundreds of Austrian Notgeld issues printed in Vienna during the post-WWI currency collapse, when municipal and local authorities across the former empire were left to paper over an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. Spitz an der Donau, a small wine-producing market town in the Wachau valley, commissioned Eduard Sieger — a Vienna printer active across numerous such local issues — to produce this 20 Heller note.

Rudolf Weber's designer credit links this to the broader artistic Notgeld movement, where local pride and tourist appeal were deliberate selling points — collectors were already purchasing unissued examples directly from municipalities by 1920.
