Comments

Strengberg is a small market commune in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is one of thousands of Austrian Notgeld pieces produced in the early 1920s to address the chronic small-coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The printer, F. Kielar of Amstetten, handled emergency currency for several municipalities in the region — a local solution to a national problem.

Three signatures authenticate the note: the mayor, deputy mayor, and municipal treasurer. That the Gemeinde-Kassier signed personally rather than using a stamp suggests production runs were small enough to sign individually.
