| Obverse description | Central vignette in olive-green letterpress presents a detailed topographic view of the Augustinian collegiate church and monastery complex at Spital am Pyhrn, set against a steep Alpine rock face with trees flanking the composition. Decorative floral borders with stylized blossoms and scrolling tendrils occupy the left and right margins. The denomination numeral '20' appears in the lower corners, with the inscription 'SPITAL AM PYHRN, OB. ÖSTERR.' across the lower panel; the engraver's name 'F. SCHWERTNER' is noted in the lower right of the central vignette. |

| Reverse description | The reverse is printed in olive-green on plain paper with a geometric wave-pattern border framing the entire note. A central oval cartouche, bordered with fine lace-like guilloche ornament, bears the issuing authority inscription and the legal text in German script, with the validity date 'Giltig bis 31 März 1921' and the municipality's liability clause. Two manuscript facsimile signatures of the Vizebürgermeister and the Bürgermeister appear below the legal text, with the denomination '20' and the inscription 'Zwanzig Heller' in bold Gothic lettering across the lower panel. |

Spital am Pyhrn is a small alpine municipality in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld emergency currency wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. With the Austro-Hungarian crown in freefall and the new republic's central banking infrastructure in disarray, thousands of local governments printed their own small-denomination paper to keep daily commerce moving — coins had essentially vanished from circulation.
F. Schwertner's engraver credit is the one detail worth pausing on. Local Notgeld was frequently jobbed out to regional printers with no particular artistry, but named engravers on small municipal issues are less common and suggest a deliberate commission rather than a stock design.
