Comments

Retz is a small wine-producing town in Lower Austria, and its 1920 Heller notgeld belongs to the enormous wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Austria after the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy left the new republic struggling to maintain small-denomination coinage in circulation. The central government simply could not produce enough low-value coin to meet everyday needs, so hundreds of towns printed their own.

The Heller itself was already a dying unit — Austria abolished it in 1924 when the Krone was replaced by the Schilling. Notes like this one were obsolete within a few years of issue.
