Rannariedl is a small market town on the upper Danube in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it was forced into issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the postwar coin shortage had made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. The 20 Heller denomination was among the most practically necessary, covering everyday transactions that metal coinage had handled before the war dismantled the monetary supply chain.
Gesellschaft für Graphische Industrie was one of Vienna's established commercial printing houses and handled Notgeld contracts for numerous municipalities during this period. The signature of Gemeindevorsteher Josef Möß gives the note its legal standing under the issuing commune.
