Randegg is a small municipality in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the acute small-change famine that gripped Austria during and after the First World War. Silver and copper coinage disappeared into hoarding almost immediately after the outbreak, forcing thousands of municipalities, businesses, and institutions to print their own fractional notes — the Notgeld phenomenon. Randegg's issue was printed locally at Scheibbs by Rudolf u. Fritz Radinger, a regional firm pressed into service producing emergency currency for the surrounding communities.
Three signatures authenticate the piece: the Bürgermeister, the Vizebürgermeister, and a Gemeinderat member — unusually full municipal sign-off for a note of this denomination.
