One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues printed between 1919 and 1922, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local governments scrambling to produce their own small-denomination scrip. Mondsee's issue was printed locally — unusual even by Notgeld standards, where most small towns outsourced to Vienna or Linz printers. The designer Reisenbichler and signatory A. Kaltenbrünner were almost certainly local figures, their names now largely unrecoverable from any broader historical record.
The Heller itself was effectively a dead unit by 1920, worth almost nothing in real terms as Austrian postwar inflation accelerated.
