Comments

Mondsee is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across Austria in 1920 when small coinage had essentially vanished from everyday commerce. Hundreds of these local emergency issues were produced by towns no larger than villages, often with more attention paid to local identity than to monetary formality. The designer credit to Reisenbichler — almost certainly a local figure rather than a professional printing house artist — is characteristic of the type.

Kaltenbrunner's mayoral signature gives the note its legal weight under municipal authority. Whether any significant quantity survived uncirculated is doubtful; most Austrian Notgeld of this size and denomination was used hard and discarded once the coinage shortage eased.
