| Obverse description | The left panel carries a letterpress vignette of the local Schulhaus (schoolhouse), a two-storey rendered building with arched ground-floor openings and a steeply pitched roof set against a wooded hillside, captioned 'Schulhaus' in script at the top. Below the vignette appear three manuscript facsimile signatures identifying the Gemeinde-Rat secretary, the Bürgermeister (J. Pfanner), and the Vize-Bürgermeister (L. Dobr.), with the printer's imprint 'Siedler, Pöggstall' at the lower left margin. The right panel, separated by a dashed border, carries the denomination inscription '20 Heller' in large Gothic script alongside the issuer text 'Gutschein der Gemeinde Marbach a. d. D.' and the validity clause 'Nur gültig bis 31. Dez. 1920, Gmde. Beschluß vom 1. 4. 1920', all printed on a plain buff ground. |

Marbach an der Donau is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the currency chaos following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With the new Republic of German-Austria unable to supply adequate small change, thousands of local authorities printed their own emergency pfennig-denominated scrip. Printed by Siedler in nearby Pöggstall rather than a major Vienna house, the production is decidedly provincial.
Both signatories are identified by office rather than full name — Bürgermeister Pfanner and Vize-Bürgermeister Dobr. — a formality that gave these community-issued pieces at least the appearance of municipal authority.
