Comments

Lochen is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized Austrian municipalities, it issued emergency small change — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. This 20 Heller piece is among the more locally rooted of such issues: both the printer, J. Mairsl, and the designer, Sepp Auer, were based in Braunau am Inn, the district capital just a few kilometers away, giving the note an unusually tight geographic provenance.

Mairsl was a regional commercial printer, not a banknote specialist, which is worth keeping in mind when assessing impression quality on surviving examples.
