Klaus is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this note belongs to the vast wave of Notgeld issued by Austrian towns and villages between 1919 and 1921 to address a crippling shortage of small-denomination coinage in the post-war collapse of the Habsburg economy. Paul Gerin in Vienna was among the most prolific printers of this material, handling commissions from hundreds of communities simultaneously.
Three municipal signatures are present — an unusually formal arrangement for a village emergency note of this denomination.
