At the top, the printer's name is set in Gothic blackletter type, below which a red Austrian imperial eagle watermark-style vignette serves as a central underprint behind the large denomination text. Herzogenburg is a small town in Lower Austria, and during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria from 1916 onward, hundreds of municipalities and local institutions issued their own emergency paper — Notgeld — to keep small transactions moving. This 20 Heller piece is one such issue, printed by the town's own print shop, the Buchdruckerei Herzogenburg, making it a genuinely local object in every sense: conceived, authorized, and manufactured within the same community it served.
