Helpfau-Uttendorf is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across the former Habsburg territories after the collapse of Austria-Hungary left communities without adequate small-denomination coinage. The three signatures — Bürgermeister Fuchs flanked by both Vizebürgermeisters Rieß and Wimmer — reflect the collective authorization typical of conscientious local administrations trying to lend legitimacy to what was, legally speaking, an improvised instrument.
Printing was handled locally by Josef Stampfl & Comp. in Braunau am Inn, roughly five kilometers from Helpfau-Uttendorf — a detail that kept production costs down and turnaround fast.
