Austrian municipal notgeld from the immediate postwar collapse, when the breakup of the Habsburg empire severed supply chains and drained coin from circulation almost overnight. Graz, as the Styrian capital, was among the first larger cities to issue its own emergency paper, and the 1919 series appeared while the new Austrian Republic was still negotiating what currency it would even adopt.
The single signature — Muchitsch — belongs to a Graz municipal official, not a bank signatory. Notgeld of this type was validated by civic rather than financial authority, which is part of why redemption records were so poorly kept.
