One of thousands of Austrian Kleingeldscheine issued in the immediate postwar years, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left rural communities without enough small coin for daily transactions. Edt bei Lambach is a village in Upper Austria, and like most issuing municipalities, it turned to a local commercial printer — in this case J. Haase of Linz — rather than any central authority. The signature of Josef Zacherl, presumably the Bürgermeister at the time, gave the note its local legal standing.
These notgeld issues were typically redeemable only within the issuing parish and for a limited period. Few were ever presented for redemption.
