Comments

Eckartsau is a small village in Lower Austria best known for the imperial hunting lodge where Karl I, the last Austrian Emperor, effectively awaited abdication in late 1918 before his exile to Switzerland in March 1919. That the municipality was issuing its own emergency small-change notes just a year later reflects how completely the postwar currency system had collapsed at the local level — coins had vanished from circulation, and communities across the former empire were printing their own Notgeld to fill the gap.

The JPR0149a series covers multiple denominations from Eckartsau. This 20 Heller piece is among the more modest issues in Austrian municipal Notgeld.
