Burgschleinitz is a small Lower Austrian village, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities during the postwar Heller inflation crisis, it issued its own emergency paper in 1920 under the Notgeld system that allowed local authorities to fill the coin shortage left by the collapse of the Habsburg monetary apparatus. These Gemeinde-issued Heller notes were legal for local transactions but carried no guarantee beyond the issuing municipality's word — essentially a community IOU printed on whatever paper was available.
The Heller itself was already being phased out by 1920, making many of these notes obsolete within months of issue.
