Austrian municipal notgeld of this type emerged from a practical crisis: the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation during and after the First World War, hoarded by a public with no confidence in the paper alternatives being issued from Vienna. Gemeinden across the Salzkammergut and Pinzgau were left to fill the gap themselves, which is why a village like Bruck issued its own fractional currency at all.
