Austrian Notgeld from the immediate post-WWI collapse, when the central monetary system had fractured so badly that individual municipalities printed their own fractional emergency currency. Bodendorf — a small community in Carinthia — issued this 20 Heller note during the period when Carinthia itself was under active dispute, with Yugoslav forces having occupied parts of the province and the October 1920 plebiscite still determining the region's political fate.
The engraver credit to Jos. Walch is worth noting — local artisan engravers were commonly engaged for these small runs, which accounts for the considerable variation in execution quality across Austrian municipal Notgeld of this period.
