Bischofshofen's Heller notgeld belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency issued after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small-denomination coinage effectively nonexistent. The Market Town issued these locally to cover transactional gaps that the Vienna authorities could not fill. At over twelve million pieces printed, this was not a scarce circulating token — it was produced in serious volume, suggesting genuine commercial need rather than the collectible-oriented notgeld that many Austrian municipalities simultaneously churned out for the philatelic trade.
