Berndorf was a company town in the most literal sense — built and owned by the Krupp family's Austrian subsidiary, Berndorfer Metallwarenfabrik, which had dominated the area since the 1840s. When postwar Austria fractured into a chaos of worthless krone and rampant hoarding of coin, municipalities were legally permitted to issue their own emergency currency, the Notgeld. Berndorf's issues were printed locally by Robert Leitner, a regional printer, rather than through any central facility.

The JPR0083a series covers the full Berndorf Notgeld set. The 20 Heller denomination is among the more commonly surviving values from this issuer.
