Anthering is a small parish municipality north of Salzburg, and this 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the First World War when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Municipalities, businesses, and even individual parishes were left to print their own emergency fractions. E. u. K. Müller was a Salzburg regional printer, not a security press — these were practical, local solutions, not formal monetary instruments.
Designer F.X. Stadler's involvement suggests some deliberate artistic attention, which was not unusual in the Salzburg region's Notgeld output.
