| Obverse description | Brown letterpress notgeld on cream paper, divided into a wider main field and a narrower right coupon by a vertical rule. The main field carries the denomination numerals '20' in ornate cartouches at each upper corner and at the lower corners, with the title 'Gutschein der Stadtgemeinde Allentsteig' in gothic script across the top. A central oval vignette presents a view of Allentsteig castle amid trees. Validity and redemption texts flank the vignette at left and right respectively, with the issue date 'Allentsteig am 1/5. 1920' and three manuscript signatures below, attributed to the Vize-Bürgermeister, Bürgermeister, and Kämmerer. The right coupon bears the denomination '20 Heller' in gothic script above a shield-shaped vignette of the town's church tower, with the inscription 'Stadtgemeinde Allentsteig Waldviertel N.-Ö.' below. |

Allentsteig is a small market town in Lower Austria's Waldviertel region, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the chronic shortage of coins that had plagued the former Habsburg economy since the war years. The Stadtgemeinde series was printed by Paul Gerin in Vienna, a firm that handled a significant volume of Austrian municipal Notgeld during this period.
The 20 Heller denomination places this squarely in the practical range: enough to matter for small transactions, too low to hoard.
