Comments

Abtenau's 20 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the First World War, when coin shortages made small-denomination scrip a municipal necessity. The E. & H. Müller press in Salzburg handled a considerable volume of this regional emergency paper, producing notes for numerous Salzburg-area communities during the same period — which means the print quality here is competent but not distinctive.

The designer credit to "Hotter" is worth noting. Local artists were frequently commissioned for these issues, giving Salzburg Notgeld a regionalist character that separates it from the more anonymous wartime scrip of larger centers. Bürgermeister Auer's signature appears in a facsimile capacity.
