Aflenz is a small Alpine market town in Styria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to fill the vacuum left by the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation. The postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system meant that coins were being hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in useful quantities; local communities had little choice but to print their own fractions.
The Jaksc catalog distinguishes multiple Aflenz issues from this period. The "a" suffix on this Pick reference typically indicates the first color or paper variant within the 20 Heller denomination — worth checking against known examples, as Aflenz produced at least two distinct printings.
