Ried im Innkreis issued this Heller notgeld in 1920 as part of the broader Austrian municipal emergency money phenomenon that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The Austro-Hungarian crown had disintegrated as a viable currency in the immediate postwar years, and hundreds of small towns across Upper Austria printed their own fractional notes to cover the catastrophic coin shortage — not as a political gesture, but as a practical necessity for daily commerce.
Hans Leitgeb signed as Bürgermeister, placing direct municipal authority behind the issue. Small-town notgeld from this region was produced in enormous variety but often limited print runs, and the 1920 Upper Austrian series is generally better documented than the earlier 1919 issues from the same district.
