Additional information

Louis II was 74 years old and in visibly declining health when Monaco's 1947 coinage program was authorized — he would die the following year. Piéfort essais of this issue were struck in extremely limited numbers as presentation pieces, a French Monnaie de Paris tradition for new or revised type approvals, and gold piéforts of this denomination were almost certainly produced in quantities countable on one hand.

The double-thickness specification accounts for the dramatic weight over a standard 20-franc flan.
