Additional information

Burundi's gold coinage of this period was tied directly to the government's effort to establish international financial credibility following independence from Belgian administration in 1962. The 1967 issue marks the first anniversary of the Republic, proclaimed after Michel Micombero's coup of November 28, 1966, which overthrew the monarchy of Mwami Ntare V — a king who had himself taken power in a coup just months earlier.

Micombero's junta used commemorative gold issues partly to court foreign recognition and investment. Few pieces entered circulation.
