Reverse description Three overlapping bovine heads face left in three-quarter view, arranged in a staggered composition that fills the upper and central field, referencing New Caledonia's cattle-ranching heritage. A small olive branch sprig appears to the left of centre below the animals. The denomination 20 f, rendered in large decorative numerals with a hatched interior, occupies the lower field. The territorial inscription NOUVELLE - CALEDONIE curves along the upper border, and mint privy marks are visible at the lower exergue.

Additional information

The Institut d'Émission d'Outre-Mer was established in 1966 specifically to manage currency for French Pacific territories after the CFP franc was separated from direct Banque de France administration. This 1967 essai — a trial strike produced for approval rather than circulation — predates the circulating 20 francs type by several years and was struck in very limited numbers, as was standard practice for IEOM pattern issues. Essais from this institution rarely enter the market, most having remained in official or specialist collections since production.
